How to set up VPN Backup with VPN trunk?

This document demonstrates how to set up VPN Backup with VPN trunk. For example, we may set up a backup VPN profile to the Remote Site's backup WAN, so that when Remote Site's primary WAN connection is not available, a VPN to the backup WAN will established automatically.


  1. Go to VPN and Remote Access >> LAN to LAN to add a backup VPN profile.


  1. If you create two profiles with the same Remote Network IP, there will be a warning message. This can be ignored since these two profiles will be in one VPN Trunk.

  1. To create VPN trunk, go to VPN and Remote Access >> VPN TRUNK Management, in the General Setup field:

    1. Enable Status.

    2. Enter Profile Name for this VPN trunk.

    3. Select Member1 and Member2 from LAN-to-LAN Profiles.

Note: One VPN profile can join only one VPN trunk; thus, the profiles that has already joined a VPN trunk will not be listed.

    1. Select Active Mode as Backup.

    2. Click Add to add the new VPN trunk.

  1. After that, the trunk profile will be listed in Backup Profile List. Click Advanced to choose the Environment Recovers Detection(ERD) mode.

  1. There are two modes can be choose. With Resume mode, VPN trunk will always try to dial Member1 first; while with Normal mode, the two members has the same priority.

  1. After the above configuration, the members vpn1 and vpn2 both will be regarded as trunk1.

Router will try to dial vpn1 first, and when it is not available, vpn2 will dial out automatically.
